My Life in the Fat Lane – Torrid Review

Torrid is the bomb!  It’s like Hot Topic for fat girls.

For years, I’ve gone into Hot Topic just to enjoy looking around, to the embarrassment of the kiddo.  Chicka promptly told me once, “We can’t go in here, I’m NOT Emo.”  I think it’s fair to say that at the time, I had only an inkling of an idea of what being “Emo” meant.  I like to tell her now that I’m at least part “Emo.”  Actually, I just think the clothes are fun and I love the cuts.  But if you’re not, part or full Emo, you’ll have a ball at Torrid.

Actually, shopping at Torrid taught me a valuable lesson.  I have been so used to buying clothes based on number that sometimes even if the fit wasn’t great, I’d still buy the clothes just because it was “in my size.”  How silly is that?  At Torrid, I learned I’m not just a number.  It was a very freeing experience.

Torrid sizing can be a bit daunting. First, there are sizes 0 – 6 and then the regular sizing that most of us are already use to – 14, 16, 18, etc. Loosely, 0 = size 12, 1 = 14/16, 3 = 22/24, 4 = 24/26, 5 = 26-28, and 6 = 30. However, my saleslady also told me that Torrid makes clothes for different shaped bodies. So a dress cut a certain way will look good on a pear shape, but not so much on an apple shape. What that meant for me is that sometimes I have to size down in the waist or up in the chest – don’t get fixed on the number.  Also, I can’t stress enough to know your measurements.  It’s super important with plus size clothing.  Sizing is simply not universal.

Add to that that Torrid has recently changed their size chart.  They have offered up to a Size 32 in the past and it seems that they are downsizing.  But wait!  The sizing chart indicates that the sizes are actually a little larger. Overall, each size has gained about an inch or so.  So if you’re a size 30, you’ll still be able to get clothing at Torrid.

If you are near a brick-and-mortar store, I suggest making a trip to try on lots of clothes to see what cuts and sizes are the best fit.

On my first trip, I grabbed the saleslady to ask. She asked me what size I wore as a general rule, then took a look at my figure and brought clothes to me to try. Overall, it was a great experience.  Imagine being a plus-size girl that’s used to things not fitting, and suddenly EVERYTHING is in your size. Hog Heaven.

In case you haven’t guessed, Torrid is one of my favorite places to shop. Bless them! Bless them! Bless them! From the bottom of my heart.

Hats are another new item for me.  This one came from Forever 21 and I like how it completes this outfit.  The jeans are crop pants that I got from Walmart (old-you’ll notice these in other photos-they are super comfy).  Find similar here.  Might need to try them one as they run a bit baggy.  The rose tank is from Torrid.  Leather jacket and earrings are from Lane Bryant.  Shoes are Toms.
