I don’t know if graffiti is art or not. I just know that I’m drawn to using it in my photography.
Years ago, after my divorce, there was a small hole in the wall bar that a good friend of mine would drag me to from time to time. I didn’t go all that often, but enough that there was a pattern to the evenings. A typical night meant stopping in at the bar and sharing a few laughs with the bartender, grabbing a burger from the grill, and catching up with friends. It was a tight bar where everyone pretty much knew everyone else. Later on, my friend would join a card game and play the rest of the night. I’d hang out with some other friends and dance.
One night, my friend told me that I should come to the bar as there was going to be a local band that was “making it big” playing. It turned out to be Rehab along with Demun Jones. Danny Boone of Rehab was from Warner Robins, just right down the road and Demun was a local boy coming home to hang out with his friends. Graffiti the World was the stand out song for me by Rehab, but another song from that night was Demun’s song Lick. I remember that Demun’s mother was there and he was a little embarrassed to sing the song in front of her, but he stepped up and belted it out. (Poor Mom). It was a fun night.
Anytime I’m drawn to graffiti, I find Rehab singing in my head and that’s quickly followed by Demun’s Lick. If you’re a Rehab fan, there are a lot of rumors that Danny Boone and Steaknife are trying to get Rehab back together. Until then, guess I’ll go pull out all the old Rehab music and Danny’s new album Fish Grease and take a listen.
