Don’t Worry, Be Happy
During Chicka’s last visit, we heard that Spartanburg, SC was hosting a new public arts project called “Lighten UP, Spartanburg.” The article I read stated that the first three bulbs had been installed. We decided to set out to find them (which wasn’t all that hard). The art project will eventually include 25 more bulbs, so I’m sure I’ll get around to finding and sharing them.
I suppose I haven’t always known that I love art. When I went back to school to get my BSN, one of the classes I ended up having to take was an introductory art class (for some reason the college did not want to accept astronomy as my option). At the time, I grumbled about it for a couple of reasons – I didn’t want to have to pay for another class AND it was going to take me longer to get to the end goal of getting my BSN.
Turns out, I really enjoyed the class. Though it was only an introduction, I ended up going to art galleries and studying pieces that I never would have seen if I hadn’t taken the class.
Now, whenever we go places, I tend to hunt for public art to photograph. Especially if I can figure out ways to interact with it.
I especially love it when a town comes out with art projects like this. The first time I saw it was when Athens, Ga had all the bulldog statues. Another time, The Dane and I stayed in St. Louis. We walked around town and discovered there were horses. In Cherokee, NC we found bears. In Beaufort, SC we found mermaids. I’m sure there are others I don’t know about yet.
Do you know of any others? I’d love to hear about them.
